FAN FICTION – ENLIGHTEN ME

I don’t get it.

Im having an impatient night on Buzznet.  Im online looking at the comments people have left me (this makes me smile)  and leaving comments on my friends posts (this makes me smile too).  Im checking out groups I frequent but there’s little or no activity. Things aren’t moving quickly enough for me.

Perhaps it’s a quiet night tonight or perhaps Im having one of those itch you can’t scratch days and I’ll never be sated?

So in my quest for stimulation I start to visit some of the fan groups that Im a member of and have sadly neglected in the past couple of months. Ive never really paid much attention to anything other than the forums in these groups – they’re a good source of  gossip information and an interesting way of passing the time (especially when the really crazy fangirls get started…..).  I do know though that journals and polls are posted here because I post them all the time.

Anyway, tonight I decided to have a closer look/lurk at the journals.  In amongst the gig reviews, music news and other assorted writings – I find something that I have never paid much attention to before – fan fiction.

I begrudgingly admit – Im blown away by some of it.  Its creative, well written and imaginative….but I just don’t get it. There’s part of me that finds it slightly disturbing.

Don’t get me wrong – as I mentioned earlier this week in someone else’s comment box  Im all for spending a good amount of time living in my head but I also believe that to stay on the healthy side of cuckoo, you have to have your feet firmly planted in this world.

So what I’d like you to tell me (especially if you’re a fan fiction writer/reader) is - am I missing the point?   Let me into your heads for a while and use the comment box for what it’s for…………..go on!

It's fiction...I don't think that anyone, especially your most talented buzzy writers, actually think that any of their stories are going to happen to them. The fact that the people that they are writing about actually exist just makes it so you have a character idea, and that is precisely what they are characters in a work of fiction. For most it's strictly a creative outlet.

I think people are just having some fun.

I'm a fanfic writer...I just do it for fun. I don't post my stories publicly, I only share them with a few people, but it's fun. I think the reasons for people writing fanfic are unique to each writer. My fics tend to take commonly accepted beliefs the public has about certain figures and flip them upside down. Jodilynne hit it on the head. The character idea is already there and it's a creative outlet. Between fanfics and fangirling, I am a mother, wife, caregiver, dish washer, table cleaner, boo boo kisser, homework helper....fanfic is just a means of play for me. I don't know if that helps, but that's my take. :)

eehm yeah i write too and its something addicting i must say woud you think it wasnt as weird if i used total fiction characters? i think fanfiction is made writing easy seeing you have your leading characters on silver plate handed to you.....some of the fanfiction i have been reading is really bad i hate bad fanfiction full of netspeak and litte to no romance and plot i also hate when people use themselves as another leading character thats just plain wrong..............

I've done fanfiction in the past for a friend, and I'm not too sure about it. Some of the characters that are "slashed" together are just weird (Harry/Malfoy anybody?)
That being said, I think that although some of these writers are creative, they are completely wasting their skills. It's just like they're copying the great ideas/characters that OTHER people thought about and twisting it into their own stories. Why can't you just come up with new characters and stuff for yourself? Why do you have to copy what other better writers have written.

Just my two cents.

Well I started reading fanfiction at 12. It was a way to express creative talent and although I don't write fanfiction that much I do read and take part in many different fandoms. Personally I enjoy the escapism of it all really. Its entertaining and a fun way to talk to people who like the same types of music/books et cetera.

i agree with jodilynne, tiger07 and crash13. also, for myself i don't think i can intellectualize why i write it. ideas just pop into my head and come out my fingers.
i could just as easily ask why the horror genre appeals to people. personally, i don't enjoy being scared to death.
as for having your "feet on the ground," there is no one who has her feet more firmly on the ground than crash13, and she writes some of the best fanfic ever! : )

Good journal, Kassady, and a good topic with many interesting responses, along with some surprising fanfic journals, too.

i'm a fanfic writer too, and i agree with a lot of these other people too. it's a creative outlet, a chance to see the celebrities that you like in a certain situation and how they would act, well not really how THEY would react, but how people think they would react. i don't know how to explain it, but it's basically just like a book, just with celebrities as characters. but i just enjoy it, its a good way to be creative.

My reasons on writing fanfiction was and still are a mystery to me. I got into it from a friend and it became an addiction.......... Fueled by plot twists and storylines....... I think out of all the stories I created there was one that stood out and now its evovled itself from fanfiction into a book I am writing. Why? Because none of my characters are Fall Out Boy anymore........ in my mind they dont look, feel or act like them.........

Other than that though, I have given up the premise of fanfiction. I wanted to get out there with it and now I dont want the stigma of Fall Out Boy on my work.........

I guess fantasy was so much better to deal with than reality......
