Scary Movies - Someone Give me One

Every time a horror movie is released I get chills.  I listen to the hype; I watch the trailers and cross my fingers that it's only really a taster of what im going to get.  To put it succinctly, I want to be frightened by a film.  I don't really care if there's a lot of blood and gore but I want the hype to live up to the reality.  And so often it doesn't.

Obviously there are a few movies that have met my expectations;

The Blair Witch Project - I don't care what people say about this in hindsight, I was terrified at the time.

Switchblade Romance (High Tension) - If you haven't seen this - you should.  I'm not sure how hard it is to access but you should make the effort.  I'm not going to say anything else for fear of giving away the plot

The Strangers - I'm sure you've all seen it now.  I was sceptical, big budget, American horror with Liv Tyler as the star?  But from the get go I could feel my blood pressure rising.  By the middle of the film I had convinced myself that nothing bad was going to happen but I still wanted an oxygen mask to breathe through.

Quarantine - I haven't seen the Spanish version but I thought this was a believable, well thought out shocker and I did jump out of my seat at one point

So, I cant be the only who's disappointed by the hype?  what I'm looking for are some suggestions, some recommendations for some really scary films.  It doesn't matter if they're big budget movies or European art house films - give me a mini review and let me know how good they are, also feel free to mention the films we all should ignore.

I found Funny Games the 2007 US versions very upsetting, and I've been told that 1997 Austrain version is even better and both were directed by the same guy.

I don't see too many, but I'd recommend avoiding Wicked Little Things! It's more gross than scarey!

I agree. I don't like scary films because 1) they don't scare me and 2) the plot always sucks.
So I'm going to suggest a few that I feel are somewhat scary (cause I don't get scared) and that have a good plot. And they are Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, Identity with John Cusack, and Saw if you haven't already seen them. Also, I hear Drag Me to Hell is supposed to be really good.

Martyrs.

Silence Of The Lambs always creeped me out, but it's more psychological than bloody. I never saw the SAW movies, but I hear they are pretty graphic and disturbing. There are also classics like The Shining, Psycho, The Omen, The Exorcist, Suspiria and Rosemary's Baby....lots to choose from!

The Exorcist will always be the scariest movie I have ever seen. I honestly could not sleep for an entire week because of how scary and freaky it was.

Also Halloween, either the old school version or the latest version that Rob Zombie directed.

Also The Blair Witch Project scared the crap out of me too.
